How to become a top makeup artist

Although you are going to go to makeup and cosmetology school for your education before you can jump into special effects makeup career, you need to learn on your own as well. Education will provide a solid background for you to grow into a top makeup artist but you will also need to use other means to learn the latest makeup techniques. See the tips below for help.

  • Learn from the internet. If you go to YouTube, you will find many makeup channels. Some of these channels have included special effects makeup tutorials while others focus entirely on beauty. You can learn a great deal from these video tutorials. Make sure you follow some top artists there and watch every video they release.
  • Pick up study material from your special effects school and explore it. You will notice that many students ignore this material, and they don’t bother digging deeper into it. If you do that hard work, you will be rewarded in your career.
  • Make sure you learn about the safe and sanitary practice. Although your school will give you an introduction to makeup safety, you will need to study much on your own.
  • Finally, you will come in contact with real clients during your training. Make sure you learn professionalism and etiquettes so that you can enjoy a good relationship with your clients later in your career.

How to Choose the Best Makeup Brushes for Yourself and Your Work

Having the right makeup brushes makes a huge difference to the look that you can achieve. They are the essential tool that everyone needs to have to get a flawless and professional looking make up finish.

You will be very surprised at what a difference it makes to your overall look when you start to use high quality makeup brushes as part of your daily routine. There are so many different types and makes on the market how do you know which ones are the very best?

Natural or Synthetic?

The first choice that you have to make it whether to buy a synthetic, or a natural bristle makeup brush. Many people assume that a natural brush is always the best, but that isn’t always true. There are many synthetic brushes on the market which mimic natural brushes pretty well. However, for some makeup applications there really isn’t any better option than to choose a natural brush.

Natural brushes are made of animal hair. Some people may not want to use these as they are usually made from goat, sable or squirrel hair. Some are horse hair. For some people this means that they will not use a natural brush as it is animal derived.

If you are going to use a natural brush you should always choose one which you can be sure is cruelty free. If you really can’t get over the basic point that this is animal hair you should choose a synthetic makeup brush. There are many on the market which closely resemble the feel of natural brushes and which produce very similar results.

The reason why natural brushes produce a different effect to synthetic brushes is that the hairs have a cuticle. These cuticles absorb the powder into the brush so that when you apply the makeup it blends with the oils on your face. This means that it is easy to get a flawless result with a natural brush.

Natural bristle brushes are best for applying makeup which is powder based. This means that if you are applying eyeshadow, blushers, bronzers, and any other makeup which is a powder, you should consider using a natural brush. Usually you won’t want to use a natural brush with cream based makeup products such as foundation or cream based blush and eye shadow.

If you want to choose the best type of natural brush most makeup artists would say that blue squirrel hair brushes are the best. They are also usually the most expensive.

Synthetic brushes can also be an excellent choice. They can be made of various synthetic materials – usually polyester or nylon. Synthetic brushes are usually less expensive than natural bristle ones.

The advantage of synthetic brushes is that they don’t absorb the makeup in between the bristles. This makes them much more suitable for cream based makeup. Ideally you would always want to use a synthetic brush to apply foundation. This advantage becomes a disadvantage when applying powder based makeup as it is more difficult to blend when the makeup is not distributed through the whole of the brush.

What Type of Brushes Should You Buy?

If you are just starting your makeup brush collection you can start with four essential brushes. The first one that you need is a large brush for powder. You may want to invest in a natural bristle brush for this, or a synthetic one which mimics a natural brush as closely as possible. The next brush that you will need is a medium sized fluffy brush. This will be for applying powder based makeup such as blush and bronzer.

An eye shadow brush is the third item that you will need for your basic set. To finish your starter set you need a small brush which you will use for blending makeup.

One you have this basic set of makeup brushes you will want to add more to your collection so that you have greater flexibility and can achieve an even better look. Other brushes that you will want to add will include a lip brush, foundation brush, contouring brush and an eyeliner brush. A spoolie brush is also an excellent brush for achieving a fuller and neater look for your eyebrows. The list goes on – once you realize the excellent results you can have with the right makeup brushes you will want to keep adding to your collection.

Although many brushes are sold in sets you don’t have to buy them in this way. You may want a combination of natural and synthetic brushes so you will need to buy each one individually. It can also be good to experiment with different brands to see which ones are your favorites.

How Much Should You Spend on Makeup Brushes?

The most fundamental factor in which makeup brushes you will choose has to be the size of your budget. The basic principle is to always spend as much as you can afford on a brush. Usually the higher the price the better the quality of the brush. Make sure that you read lots of makeup brush reviews so that you can make a good choice and keep within your budget.

You may experience sticker shock with that $60 blue squirrel powder brush, but did you know that it could last 20 years if you care for it correctly? It is a big investment, but it could last you for many years.

Cleaning Makeup Brushes is Essential

No matter how much you have paid for your makeup brushes it is important that you care for them correctly. You need to get into a regular cleaning routine. This not only ensures that they remain as bacteria free as possible, but also helps to extend the life of the brushes.

There are a number of different ways that you can clean your makeup brushes. There are lots of excellent makeup brush cleaners available. You do not have to use a specific makeup brush cleaning product though. Many makeup artists suggest that you just use a good soap to clean the brushes. You simply wet the brushes and then apply soap to them. Always be gentle and don’t agitate the bristles too much or you will damage them. Rinse out the soap and leave them to dry on a clean towel. This is a very simple process which you should do every month.

How To Become a Makeup Artist

Are you someone who can tell instantly what color lipstick would look perfect on someone based on complexion and wardrobe? Maybe you like the way Hollywood celebrities look different every day because of makeup. Whatever your reason to develop a career as a makeup artist, you should be ready to compete with other aspirants like yourself. Talent, consistency, and hard work will determine your success.

As a makeup artist, you will need to develop skills in different key areas. For example, you will need to learn to use broad strokes when you are creating a character for the stage. Similarly, you will rely on subtle strokes when it comes to film or TV artists. Below, you will find what it takes to become a makeup artist.

Step 1: Build a cash cushion

You’ll need money for education, supplies, and building a successful business.  Try to keep yourself out of debt.  One successful makeup artist we know worked as a project manager at a water restoration construction company until she was able debt-free and had a small nest egg.  Another was a receptionist at a steel company (in New Jersey but close to Phiily!).  Another was a teacher at Camden High School, until she quit to follow her dream.  None of these women had a lot of money to start out with, but needed to develop a nest egg.  One other benefit is that all three ladies felt as though they were able to bring helpful job skills to their new profession.  It takes money to make money!!!

Step 2: Develop makeup skills on your own

The foremost thing that you need to do as an aspiring makeup artist is to practice makeup to perfect your skill. Ideally, you should be able to produce similar results whether applying makeup on yourself or someone else.

Remember, you will need to experiment with different faces, age groups, skin types, and makeup brands to see what combination produces the best results. Work on different makeup texture to develop full command over your craft.

You will also need to work with different brushes so that you can handle different sizes and shapes.

Step 3: Hone your skills with education and experience

Learning to apply makeup on your own isn’t the only step that’s required to become a makeup artist. In fact, study and experience gained by working with other professional artists go a long way in determining where you end up as a professional makeup artist.

You can easily find beauty schools in your area. These schools may have a varying curriculum, but they all cover the basic makeup skills. You will learn special makeup techniques from people who have been in beauty industry for years.

Step 4: Gain experience and practice makeup by doing a job at a cosmetics counter

A cosmetics counter is probably the best place to start applying the skills you have learned from practice at home and beauty school.

At a cosmetics counter, you will not only sell makeup, but you will also get to practice makeup application as well.

If you can’t find a job, try to find someone who takes interns. This will give you real-world experience even when you can’t land a job.

Step 5: Pick an industry

Once you have studied at a beauty clinic and have real-world practice hours under your belt, you are ready to choose an industry. Do you want to work on fashion models that walk the ramp or you want to work on broader strokes with theater artists? Maybe you want to apply your makeup techniques on celebrity faces?

It’s your choice but don’t delay it beyond this point.

Once you have decided the industry, you want to go, find an entry-level job or an internship. Networking with other stylists and artists can help you a great deal in this step.

As you work in your favorite industry, don’t forget to build a portfolio. Your portfolio will showcase your best and most creative work making a great impression of your talent and skills.

7 Tips For Becoming a Celebrity Makeup Artist

If you are an aspiring makeup artist, you may have a desire to do makeup for celebrities. After all, it is the highest point in the career of a makeup artist. It’s exciting, and you meet celebrities every day.

It’s not easy to get up there among the elite makeup artists, and you don’t get a chance to work with celebrities unless you are there on the top. So the only way is to pursue your career with passion and be the one who can do no wrong with a brush and color.

Here are seven tips that will help you become a sought-after makeup artist in the Hollywood.

Tip 1: Live where the celebrities live

This tip is probably the most straightforward tip that you might receive from different people. If you want to work with celebrities, you have to live where they live so that you can be around when an opportunity comes by.

The easiest way to be around celebrities is to be in one of the big cities where runway and theatre are regular. Meet new people, make connections, and tell everyone that you are awesome with brush and color.

Tip 2: Assist artists who work with celebrities

One of the easiest ways or you can call it a shortcut to work with celebrities as a makeup artist is to assist someone who is already working in the entertainment industry. Build some connections and then find someone who needs an assistant. If you’ve studied makeup and have a natural skill to handle brush and color, you will find a job.

Assist an artist for a few years and get to know people around you. There will be a time when to get your own contracts.

Tip 3: Book an agent who can get you work in the entertainment industry

Sometimes an agent with connections in the entertainment industry is the only thing you need to become a celebrity makeup artist. The cost of hiring a top agent might seem on the high, but once you get a decent contract, everything will seem within reach.

Tip 4: Establish yourself as a top makeup artist in a city where celebrities come on vacations

Another great way to land a celebrity client is to make a name for you in a place where celebrities go for vacations. Once you have proven your skill and knowledge, a celebrity will eventually become your client.

Tip 5: Get a good education

If you can afford to go to a cosmetology school, you have a great chance of becoming a top makeup artist. Many celebrities pick graduates from these schools as their makeup artists so your chances of becoming a celebrity makeup artist will be higher with a degree in makeup from a top cosmetology institute.

Tip 6: Make connections

Nothing beats networking. If you are hardworking and have great skill with the brush but you don’t know anyone in the entertainment industry, you might fail to land a client even after years of high-quality work.

Be friendly, treat people nicely, and come to their help whenever you can. You will make many new friends.

Tip 7: Learn about the latest makeup techniques and products

When you are chasing celebrities, you have to be on top of your thing. In this case, you should always stay updated with the latest makeup products and techniques to make the best use of these products. If your knowledge and products are outdated, you will find it very difficult to land celebrity clients.
